Leigh Spinners Mill celebrated its centenary today. Local MP – Jo Platt – joined businesses, creatives and local residents – including 100-year-old Ronnie – as they celebrated the mill turning 100.
Once among the largest cotton mills in the UK, Leigh Spinners Mill was built in two stages -one before and one after the First World War. The first part was completed in 1913, followed by the second in 1925.
Originally powered by impressive spinning machinery that significantly contributed to Leigh’s industrial growth and job creation, the historic mill has since evolved into a lively centre for community enterprises, especially after the decline of the cotton industry.
Being being re-elected as Leigh and Atherton’s MP, Jo Platt was General Manager at Leigh Spinners Mill. Speaking at the celebration today, she said: “What a fantastic day of celebration – it was made even more special by sharing it with 100-year-old Ronnie, who brought some real local history with him.
“Ronnie used to run the chip shop over Butts Bridge and kept the night shift at the Mill going with essential chippy teas. It was an honour to celebrate with someone who remembers the building in its working heyday.
Jo added: “It’s always a joy to connect with businesses, both long-standing and newly arrived – and huge thanks to Floor 5 business Cloth Ears for adding a galactic twist to the day with some very impressive Star Wars special guests.
“Massive thanks also to Madam Mayor and her Consort for attending, and to the hundreds of people who came out to support the Mill.
“But none of this would be possible without the incredible staff and volunteers who give their time, energy and passion to keep the heart of this building beating.
“Preserving our local heritage isn’t just about the past – it’s about building a future. By repurposing spaces like Leigh Spinners Mill, we’re not only honouring the generations who came before us, but also creating opportunities for the generations to come.
“Here’s to the next 100 years of community, creativity, and resilience under this incredible roof. I am proud to have been a part of it.”
