Labour announces VALOUR.

As the nation prepares to mark VE Day, Jo Platt – MP for Leigh and Atherton – has welcomed the Government’s announcement of a major new support system for veterans, designed to improve access to vital services across the UK.

The new network – named VALOUR – will be backed by £50 million of government funding and will create a UK-wide system of veteran support, ensuring those who have served can more easily access help with housing, employment, health and welfare. The programme marks a significant step in fulfilling the Government’s manifesto pledge to fully implement the Armed Forces Covenant.

VALOUR will establish a network of recognised support centres across the country, with Regional Field Officers working on the ground to connect charities, service providers, and local government – delivering joined-up, evidence-driven care for the veteran community.

Jo Platt said: “As the country marks the start of VE Day celebrations, Labour is unveiling a new nationwide support programme for veterans, named VALOUR, designed to improve access to care and assistance for those who have served.

“VALOUR is a transformative system that will ensure veterans in Leigh and Atherton and across the UK are no longer faced with a postcode lottery when they need support.

“These brave individuals deserve nothing less than accessible, effective help wherever they live, and this investment is a clear demonstration of our commitment to those who have served.

“We owe deep gratitude to all who have been willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. This should never be forgotten.”

The first VALOUR support centres will become operational in 2026, shaped by veterans themselves through research and focus groups. Services could include help booking GP appointments, finding housing, accessing welfare support, or securing employment opportunities.

The initiative has been welcomed by key partners including the Royal British Legion, which described it as a “crucial” step in ensuring veterans lead successful post-service lives.

This announcement follows a series of actions taken by the Government to improve support for veterans over the past year, including:

  • Removing the local connection requirement for social housing

  • Awarding £3.5 million in new funding to homelessness services

  • Launching Op ASCEND, helping veterans into meaningful employment

VALOUR also lays the foundation for broader support in the future, with plans to expand the system to the wider Armed Forces community.
