Jo Platt MP for Leigh and Atherton
A £20m fund has been guaranteed to given to Leigh by Government under the new Plan for Neighbourhoods.
Leigh is one of 75 towns across the UK that will receive up to £20m in funding, alongside specialist support over the next decade.
This Government’s Plan for Neighbourhoods recognises that communities have the answers to the local problems they face and should be given more control over what they spend their money on to address their unique needs.
The previous Government’s plan for towns was overly restrictive and involved yet more micro-managing from Westminster, meaning that money was often spent on surface-level improvements which delivered limited benefits to people’s lives.
The announcement today means that towns will now have far more flexibility in how money is spent and where investment goes.
Jo Platt has responded in the Chamber to the announcement. Watch her contribution here:
Speaking after the debate in Westminster, Jo Platt said: “This is just the start. I fully understand that there are other towns in the constituency that have different needs and require similar attention. I will continue to work with this Government to ensure that all our towns in Leigh and Atherton are given the opportunity to thrive.”
