Jo Platt – the Leigh and Atherton MP – has voted in support of the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill.

The Government’s Plan for Change is built on strong border security as part of a properly controlled and managed immigration system.

Unlike the Tory’s misguided and costly Rwanda scheme, this legislation offers a real, effective solution to a serious issue that I know is a grave concern for many of my constituents.

This landmark legislation gives law enforcement unprecedented powers to tackle criminal smuggling gangs and end illegal small boat crossings.

Key measures include:

  • Seizing devices like phones and laptops to disrupt criminal operations.
  • New offences with up to 14 years in prison for selling small boat parts.
  • Serious Crime Prevention Orders targeting immigration criminals.
  • Tougher penalties for endangering lives at sea during perilous crossings.
  • Strengthening Border Security Command to improve coordination between law enforcement agencies.

With £150 million invested to combat smuggling, the Government is sending a clear message: the UK will not tolerate abuse of our immigration system. They are using every tool at their disposal to pursue those who undermine our border security in every way we can.
