Jo Platt attended a candle-lit vigil today, to mark the 76th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The event took place at 3:45pm, on Tuesday 10 December, at New Palace Yard, alongside fellow MPs. The vigil was arranged to celebrate the human rights successes that have been achieved over the years.
There have been many successes, including:
- Securing the release of wrongfully imprisoned individuals, such as Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe.
- Delivering historic rights gains in Northern Ireland, with the decriminalisation of abortion and the legalisation of same-sex marriage.
- Realising the adoption of wide-ranging equality legislation.
- Building more support for victims of gender-based violence in conflict and of modern-day slavery.
- Generating momentum for the creation of the International Criminal Court
- Bringing about an Arms Trade Treaty.
The event took place on International Human Rights Day. It was arranged by Amnesty International UK and the All-Party Parliamentary Human Rights Group.
