An Honorary Alderman is a title is given to former elected members who have served in the council for more than 20 years. They may have had cabinet roles, or have chaired council committees.

Jo Platt said: “It was an honour to attend Former Councillor John O’Brien’s Honorary Alderman ceremony. John has been a dedicated public servant. He was first elected in 2001 – and he served as the Mayor of Wigan from 2007-2008 – so it was wonderful to see him honoured in this way. I was glad that I was able to attend, so I could congratulate him in person.”

The Honorary Alderman brings no special rights, it is intended to reflect their position within the community. The conferring of Honorary Aldermen in Wigan Borough dates back to 1982. The appointment has to be approved by current elected members.
