Jo Platt – the MP for Leigh and Atherton – attended a Gambling Reform event in Parliament today.

The session provided visitors with the opportunity to learn more about gambling reform in the UK and to hear the experiences of those impacted by gambling harm. The event also explored how Parliamentarians can ensure that that gambling regulation in the UK remains fit for purpose.

Leading figures in the gambling reform space – including senior clinicians, think tank fellows and gambling reform philanthropists – were in attendance.

Jo Platt said: “I attended the Gambling Reform APPG drop-in to learn more about the work needed to reform the gambling landscape – and to hear the consensus shared by clinicians, public health experts, academics and those impacted by gambling harm.”

Since the 2005 Gambling Act, the gambling industry has grown exponentially. The White Paper – ‘High Stakes: Gambling Reform for a Digital Age’ (which was published in April, 2023) – made a series of policy changes to update the UK’s gambling regulations.

However, over a year on from the publication of the White Paper, the future of tackling gambling-related harm remains uncertain. New evidence from the Gambling Commission’s Gambling Survey for Great Britain has also highlighted the extent of gambling harm around the country and the need to achieve reforms.
