The Golborne railway station proposal is one step closer to becoming a reality. The proposal is due to be submitted as a planning application next month.

The outline business case has been agreed. The scheme has now progressed to a detailed design and planning application and it’s set to be submitted next month.

What’s happened so far?

The Outline Business Case was submitted to the Department for Transport (DfT) for governance in March 2024.

The DfT concluded its review in July and the scheme was endorsed to progress to Detailed Design stage – subject to Ministerial approval and few other conditional points. The scheme then progressed to the end of Outline Design
process.

What happens next?

The planning application is now being prepared, land negotiations are being made and a tender is being created for the detailed design and build.

All being well, the planning application will be submitted in September 2024, to allow for any planning conditions to be included within the tender for detailed design and discharged during the next stage of the project.

Jo Platt, MP for Leigh and Atherton said: “It’s great that theĀ Golborne railway station is one step closer to being a reality. The infrastructure in our area desperately needs improving – and a railway station coming to Golborne is a massive leap in the right direction.

“Golborne’s team of dedicated councillors – Susan Gambles, Yvonne Klieve and Gena Merrett have backed this project since the start. They have worked solidly on this for five years – alongside myself and Andy Burnham. They have fought for this to happen and I cannot thank them enough.”
