Jo Platt MP for Leigh and Atherton

Jo Platt, the MP for Leigh and Atherton, met up with Louise Haigh, the Secretary of State for Transport, alongside other Northern MPs. The group came together to discuss ways of improving connectivity in the region.
During the meeting, it was acknowledged that the country still has a long way to go to achieve the level of connectivity that our communities needs.
One of the key points that Jo Platt raised was the importance of working together with neighbouring areas, particularly Worsley and Eccles, Warrington, Wigan, and Makerfield, on future infrastructure projects.
Jo Platt said: “We had an encouraging and productive discussion about how we can improve transport links in our region. Collaborations between neighboring areas will be essential for creating a seamless network that makes commuting easier and more efficient for all of us.
“The government has a commitment to making public transport work for us. This was celebrated with the introduction of the Transport Bill, which aims to bring our railways back into public ownership. This is a welcome development for the entire country, which has endured high fares and infrequent services for far too long.
“We have a plan to foster economic growth and stability. Connecting our towns to jobs, training, and skills opportunities will be crucial to unlocking our full potential. By improving transport links, we can ensure that everyone has access to these opportunities, making our community stronger and more resilient.”
Anyone that followed Jo’s efforts during her previous time in Parliament will know that transport and connectivity have always been high on her agenda.
Jo added: “We’ve made significant strides, particularly with the public ownership of our bus network, thanks to the tireless work of our GM Mayor. The success of the guided busway and the plan to reopen Golborne train station are notable achievements. But we know this is just the beginning.
“I am committed to working closely with the new Secretary of State and the Transport Department to ensure that our constituency is part of the conversation. Together, we can create the growth and development we need.”
